Een turquoise betegeld pierenbadje onder de kindercrèche, op het dak van het enorme flatgebouw, dat vooral herinner ik me van een bezoek aan Cité radieuse, het appartementen gebouw dat Corbusier net na de oorlog voor de stad Marseille ontwierp. Officieel bekend onder de naam Unité d’Habitation. En een aardige mevrouw die er vanaf het begin woonde en het tot haar taak zag mensen een blik te laten werpen in het interieur van een van de appartementen. Dat was in Marseille in 2006.
Nu zag ik in het architectuurmuseum van Parijs, officieel ‘Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine’ , het interieur van een zorgvuldig nagebouwde flat – net als die ik toen bezocht, zoals le Corbusier het bedoeld heeft. Wat is het toch dat (schaal-)modellen, maquettes en reconstructies zo aantrekkelijk maakt.
Alles in de flat is vernuftig, slim bedacht. Ingebouwde boekenkastjes, een schuifdeur met schoolbordverf voor de kinderkamers, een opbergplek onder de trede die met lekkere kussens een zitplaats wordt, kleine versieringen in de betonnen balkontafel, een handige indeling van de (open!) keuken. Het derde huis van Corbusier dat ik in Parijs zie en opnieuw past het als een jas.
A turquoise tiled wading pool under the nursery, on the roof of the huge apartment building, is what I remember best from a visit to Cité radieuse, the apartment building that Corbusier designed for the city of Marseille just after the war. Officially known under the name Unité d’Habitation. And I remember a nice lady who lived there from the beginning and it was her wish to let people take a look at the interior of her apartment. That was in Marseille in 2006.
Now I saw in the architectural museum of Paris, officially ‘Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine’, a carefully reconstructed flat as I then visited, as Le Corbusier intended it. What is it that makes scale models and reconstructions so attractive.
Everything in the flat is ingenious, cleverly conceived. Built-in bookcases, a sliding door with chalkboard paint for the children’s rooms, a storage place under the tread that becomes a seat with nice cushions, small decorations in the concrete balcony table, a convenient layout of the (open!) kitchen. The third house of Corbusier that I see in Paris and again it fits like a coat.
Een zaalwacht legde met plezier uit hoe het met de voordeur zit. De brieven schuift de postbode door de smalle brievenbus met het plexiglas plaatje. Het bovendeurtje is voor de bakker en de kruidenier, het blauwe metalen kastje is voor de geleverde zuivel, het vak eronder herbergt een blok ijs met een afvoerslangetje voor het smeltwater!
A guard explained with pleasure how it is with the front door. The letters slides the postman through the narrow mailbox with the plexiglass plate. The upper door is for the baker and the grocery, the blue metal cupboard is for the delivered dairy, the box underneath it houses a block of ice with a drain hose for the melting ice!
