Modellpark Berlin heet het, een soort Madurodam, maar eenvoudiger, met een rek ansichtkaarten en een tentje waar ze curryworst verkopen. Jammergenoeg niet hele kleine, niet op schaal. Er moet voortdurend en flink opgeknapt worden, verzekerde de meneer me die middenin de Rijksdag stond om de schade van de laatste storm op te nemen. Maar het is goed gedaan, met hier en daar een knop die werkt. Bachs orgelmuziek uit de kerktoren, en geluid van joelend publiek bij het stadion. Het is een project als sociale werkplaats waar mensen met een handicap hun bijdrage leveren. Het is een beetje onderkomen, nogal wat torens zijn afgebroken en vogels zijn op balkonnetjes gaan zitten die dat niet overleefden. Er was ook geen totaalplan-van-aanpak, de panden zijn uitgestrooid over het terrein, naast veel te hoog geworden struiken. Maar dat maakt het allemaal juist zo charmant.

It is called Modellpark Berlin, a kind of Madurodam, -the tiny version of the Netherlands in the Hague-, but simpler with a rack of postcards and a tent where they sell currywurst. Unfortunately not very small, not to scale. There is a need for continuous and substantial refurbishment, assured me the gentleman standing in the middle of the Reichstag to assess the damage from the latest storm. But it’s done well, with a button here and there that works. Bach’s organ music from the church tower, and the sound of a screaming audience at the stadium. It is a project as a sheltered workplace where people with disabilities make their contribution. It is a bit shabby, quite a few towers have been demolished and birds have settled on balconies that did not survive. There was also no plan-of-action, the buildings were scattered over the site, next to bushes that have grown too high. But that’s what makes it all so charming.

Dit vond ik zo grappig. Het Zeissplanetarium was ingestort, en dan plaatsen ze er wat bouwmateriaal en dragliners bij, redelijk op schaal, totdat er weer geld en tijd is om het op te knappen. Werk in uitvoering!

I thought this was so funny. The Zeiss planetarium had collapsed, and then they add some building materials and dragliners, reasonably to scale, until there is money and time to fix it up again. Work in progress!

En ja, ook het Joods Historisch Museum van Libeskind staat er, dat je nu van boven kunt zien en opvallend veel gelijkenis vertoont met het ontwerp voor het holocaust monument in Amsterdam. Vol opdringerige bedoelingen en symboliek.


And yes, the Jewish Historical Museum of Libeskind is also there, which you can now see from above and which has a striking resemblance to the design for the Holocaust monument in Amsterdam. Full of intrusive intentions and symbolism.

En om het rond te maken: Haus Lemke; het huis dat Mies van der Rohe in 1938 voor het echtpaar Lemke bouwde, net voor hij, vluchtend voor de nazi’s, naar de VS vertrok.

And to round it off: Haus Lemke; the house that Mies van der Rohe built for the Lemke couple in 1938, just before he left for the US, fleeing the Nazis.

Ik ben het vandaag op gaan zoeken, net voor het weer dicht moet.
Het is fantastisch gelegen aan een klein meer, de Obersee, in de wijk Hohenschönhausen. Het is bescheiden en prettig van verhoudingen; je zou er zo in willen.
Na de oorlog werd de omgeving van het huis verboden gebied; geheel in beslag genomen door het er vlakbij gelegen Ministerium für Staatssicherheit. De tuin werd een parkeerplaats, het huis een wasserette. Je ziet nog sporen van een extra raam in de bakstenen muur. Inmiddels is het een gerenoveerd monument.

I went to look it up today, just before it has to close again. It enjoys a fantastic location on a small lake, the Obersee, in the Hohenschönhausen district. It is modest and pleasant in proportions; you would like move in, like this. After the war, the area around the house became a prohibited area; completely taken up by the nearby Ministerium für Staatssicherheit. The garden became a parking lot, the house a laundry. You can still see traces of an extra window in the brick wall. It is now a renovated monument.
