Het Museum der Dinge was even geopend en het is echt een van de leukste die ik ken!
Helemaal niet groot, zonder pretenties; er staan gewoon heel veel houten vitrinekasten met spullen, geordend op thema en zonder hiërarchie. Gebruikte objecten waar hele levens achter schuilgaan, verhalen verteld worden, die herinneringen opwekken en ontroering teweegbrengen. Daarmee zit je bij mij natuurlijk wel goed. Het is beslist anders dan een rommelmarkt of een kringloopwinkel. Een medewerker vertelde me dat het een topje van de ijsberg is. Er wordt misschien drie procent getoond van wat er allemaal in de opslag ligt.

Not big at all, without pretensions; there are just a lot of wooden display cabinets with things, arranged by theme and without hierarchy. Used stuff that hides entire lives, stories are told, that awaken memories and bring about emotion. Then of course you are in the right place with me. It’s definitely different from a flea market or thrift store. An employee told me it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Maybe three percent of what is in storage is shown.

Het vindt zijn oorsprong in de Deutscher Werkbund, een idealistische organisatie van kunstenaars, vormgevers en industriëlen, opgericht in 1907 met als doel het niveau van productie en ontwerp van gebruiksartikelen te verbeteren. Het lijkt een beetje op de Stichting Goed Wonen die in Nederland na de oorlog in het leven werd geroepen. Met advies voor het interieur, om van de in de woonkamer centraal geplaatste bolpoot tafel met Perzisch tapijt af te komen. Onder het motto: smaak is een kwestie van opvoeding.

It originated in the Deutscher Werkbund, an idealistic organization of artists, designers and industrialists, founded in 1907 with the aim of improving the level of production and design of consumer items. It is a bit like the Stichting Goed Wonen that was established in the Netherlands after the war. The Museum der Dinge, which manages the Werkbund archive, is more generous in its aesthetic view. There, just as much value is attached to objects by well-known designers as the anonymous, in a caring way, design next to home industry, function next to kitsch. That’s what makes it so attractive.
