Tiepolo

Stel je voor; je bent zoon van een bankier en je hoeft je nooit meer zorgen te maken over geld; je reist met je vrouw elk jaar naar Italië om inkopen te doen en je verneemt dat er een fresco van Tiepolo te koop is. Een frésco die Tiepolo in 1750 in de natte kalk op een enorme wand van villa Contarini -even buiten Venetië- aanbracht. De grote centrale voorstelling, een levendig, drukbevolkt tafereel in  pasteltinten, toont de aankomst van Koning Hendrik III twee eeuwen eerder in dezelfde villa. Een tussenstop in Venetië op weg naar Parijs waar hij gekroond zou worden tot de nieuwe koning. Je begrijpt niet hoe het kan; maar zo’n enorme fresco kun je dus losmaken van de wand, laten inpakken, transporteren en plaatsen in het trapportaal van je huis in Parijs.

Dat trapportaal is al een feest op zich. De marmeren trap kronkelt en krult, steeds weerspiegeld en vormt een perfecte context, naadloos overgaand in de scene die Tiepolo schilderde. De enige aanpassing die nodig was in het bestaande marmer, betrof de benen van een wachter die net buiten de lijst vielen. De afbeeldingen doen geen recht, je moet er de tijd voor nemen; het zit zo goed in elkaar, zo wervelend en feestelijk, zo zacht en gloeiend van kleur. 

Imagine; you are the son of a banker and you never have to worry about money; you travel with your wife to Italy every year to do some shopping and you learn that there is a Tiepolo fresco for sale. A frésco Tiepolo painted in 1750 in the wet lime on a huge wall of villa Contarini – even outside Venice. The large central representation, a lively, crowded scene in pastel shades, shows the arrival of King Henry III two centuries earlier in the same villa. A stopover in Venice on the way to Paris where he would be crowned the new king. You do not understand how it is possible; but you can detach such a huge fresco from the wall, pack it, transport it and place it in the staircase of your house in Paris.

That pedestrian portal is already a feast in itself. The marble staircase meanders and curls, always reflected in mirrors and forms a perfect context, seamlessly changing into the scene that Tiepolo painted. The only adjustment needed in the existing marble was for the legs of a guard who just fell outside the list. The images do not do justice, you have to take the time for it; it is so well put together, so swirling and festive, so soft and glowing in color.

Er zijn meer redenen om Musée Jacquemart-André te bezoeken, het in tact gebleven voormalig woonhuis van het echtpaar. Ooit een ‘geheimtip’, nu bekend en druk bezocht. Behalve de Tiepolo zijn er schilderijen van Uccello (Sint Joris en de draak), Mategna en Bellini, Supper at Emmaus van Rembrandt en stillevens van Chardin. Een fantastisch huis, gebouwd voor de museale collectie. En als je snel bent kun je er tot eind januari 2019 tien werken van Caravaggio zien.

Edouard en zijn vrouw Nélie kochten een tweede fresco en plaatsten die tegen het plafond van de eetzaal – nu het restaurant. Een derde Tiepolo fresco buiten Italië is te zien in Wurzburg, in het bisschoppelijk paleis. Daar ben ik ooit met mijn moeder naar gaan kijken die me -toen we na afloop in de auto stapten- zei: zullen we teruggaan en langer blijven. En dat deden we, een paar uur lang.

There are more reasons to visit the Musée Jacquemart-André. Once a ‘secret tip’, now known and crowded. Besides the Tiepolo there are paintings by Uccello (Saint George and the dragon) , Mategna and Bellini, Supper at Emmaus by Rembrandt and still lives by Chardin. A fantastic house, built for the museum collection. And if you are fast you can see ten works by Caravaggio until the end of January 2019

Edouard and his wife Nélie bought a second fresco and placed it against the ceiling of the dining room – now the restaurant. A third Tiepolo fresco outside Italy can be seen in Wurzburg, in the episcopal palace. I once went to see it with my mother who – when we got into the car afterwards – said: “Shall we go back and stay longer. And we did, for a few hours.
